Suzhou
Suzhou is a major city in the south-east of Jiangsu Province, about 120km west of Shanghai. The city is close to the Yangtze River and forms part of its delta. The city is worth visiting in its own right and as a base for touring the water villages and Yangtze River.

The Gardens
Humble Administrator
The Humble Administrator's Garden is considered to be one of the finest in southern China and has been awarded UNESCO World Heritage Site status in 1997. There have been gardens on the site since the 12th century. Though their shape, size and form have changed many times over the centuries.
The present gardens date back to 16th century when Wang Xiancheng, an Imperial Envoy and poet of the Ming Dynasty built a garden on the site. Later his son extended the gardens but lost them through gambling. The gardens changed hands and style many times over the next few centuries. In 1949 the Chinese Government rejoined all three parts of the garden and opened them to the public.

The floating wall rises and falls like waves over the a lake. This area of the garden is a quiet tranquil part.
Post Office

The post office inside the gardens is housed in one of the original style buildings. It looks out through lattice windows into the garden. The post office here is one of the easier places to find stamps and post cards in the area.
Pagoda
The Beisi Ta Pagoda built of stone, brick and wood rises 9 floors over the city and offers fine fews of the old town.

The pagoda at Bao'en Temple in Suzhou (Jiangsu Province) rises over 70 metre and has an octagonal shape. There are good views of the city from the upper floors.

The gardens at the Bao'en Temple offer a tranquil break from the hussle of the the city. There are a number of walkways through the garden alongside streams and ponds.
Qinmen Canal

Within Suzhou you don't have far to go to come across a canal which criss cross the main tourist area. The canal along Qinmen Street, leads to tributaries flowing into Yancheng Lake to the north of the city.
Taohuawu St. Canal
Canals
The canal along Taohuawu St. and Xibeije St flows into the Waicheng River. It is interesting to wander about the older streets of this part of the city.
