The Bull Island lies about 5km north of Dublin City. It runs for another 5 km along the shoreline heading towards Sutton and Howth. On the seaside of the island is a sandy beach known as Dollymount Strand. Between the beach and the inner side of the island, there are sand dunes and golf courses. A nature reserve lies between the inner shoreline and the main coastal road. The Island is a designated National Bird Sanctuary, a biosphere reserve, a National Nature Reserve, a Special Protection Area under the EU Birds Directive and a Special Area of Conservation under the EU Habitats Directive,

Ducks

Duck is the common name for a large number of species in the waterfowl family Anatidae, which also includes swans and geese. Ducks are mostly aquatic birds, mostly smaller than the swans and geese, and may be found in both freshwater and seawater. During the winter season, a number of ducks arrive at the bird sanctuary.

Herons and Egrets

Many egrets are members of the genera Egretta or Ardea which also contain other species named as herons rather than egrets. The distinction between a heron and an egret is rather vague and depends more on appearance than biology. The word egret comes from the French word aigrette that means both silver heron and brush, referring to the long filamentous feathers that seem to cascade down an egrets back during the breeding season.
