Charles Fort is situated on Kinsale KHarbour, quite close to Summercove. It is a star shapped fortification, running right down to the water. The fort also acts as a light house with a small beacon at it's most southerly end.

Kinsale Harbour is a very sheltered port as it is virtually land locked. The harbour is a functioning commercial, fishing and leisure port.

Kinsale is located on the mouth of the River Bandon just as it meanders towards the sea. The town is popular with visitors during the summer months and is a good base for touring West Cork.

Inner Harbour

The inner harbour runs along the edge of the town, bounded on the east by Scilly Hill. It is less busy than the harbour area around the sailing club and small docks.

Sandycove is a small beach across the River Bandon just outside the town. Though small it is popular on sunny days. St. James Fort is on the head land just above the beach. From the fort there re commanding views of Kinsale. The Fort is named after James 1st of England and was constructed in 1602. It is located in the peninsula of Kinsale Harbour south Cork.

The River Bandon flows into the sea at Kinsale Harbour. The bridge crossing the river is popular with locals fishing for Mackerel in August. The river is also well known for it's excellent salmon fishing during the season. To fish on the river you need both a rod license and a fishing permit. The main fish here are salmon; sea trout and nighttime fly-fishing.
Old Head Kinsale
Whether on a warm summers day or during stormy winter weather, the Old Head of Kinsale offers some splendid views.

Unfortunately, access to the Old Head and it's light house is restricted to golfers. Prior to the construction of the Golf Course a visit to the lighthouse was popular trip.
