Lough Key is near Boyle town, and is a well-known spot for both leisurely and energetic outdoor pursuits and is steeped in history. Lough Key Forrest Park (800 acres) has a Visitor Centre and offers various activities. There are also several islands on Lough Key, but Castle Island gives the most impressive views of the area, while Trinity Island offers the ruins of a chapel, which is associated with the Boyle Abbey.

Boyle is a town in Co. Roscommon near Lough Key. It is a well-known spot for fishing enthusiasts as it is in close proximity to Lough Key, Lough Arrow and Lough Gara. Local interests include King House, Boyle Abbey, Abbeytown Bridge and Lough Key Forrest Park. It is also the birthplace of Maureen O’ Sullivan, who played Jane in the ‘Tarzan’ movies from 1932 to 1942.

Boyle Abbey is located in Boyle town and is a superbly restored Cistercian Abbey of the 12th Century and as a result one of the best preserved in Ireland. Tour guides of the Abbey and the grounds are available, while at the restored gatehouse an exhibition can be enjoyed.
