Friesland is a province located in the northern part of the Netherlands. It is situated west of Groningen. The population is approx. 646,092 and a total area of 5,100 km2 . The capital and seat of the provincial government is the city of Leeuwarden, a city with 91,817 inhabitants

Leeuwarden

Leeuwarden is the provincial capital and seat of the States of Friesland. The municipality has a population of 122,293. The region has been continuously inhabited since the 10th century. It came to be known as Leeuwarden in the early 9th century AD and was granted city privileges in 1435. It is the main economic hub of Friesland, situated in a green and water-rich environment. Leeuwarden is a former royal residence and has a historic city center.

Harlingen

Harlingen is located on the coast of Wadden Sea. It is a town with a long history of fishing and shipping. Harlingen received city rights in 1234. Ferries operate to the Wadden islands of Vlieland and Terschelling from the port in Harlingen.

Aldegaster Brekken to Hindeloupen

Cycle along the banks of the Aldegaster Brekken to Njihuizum. Take the water taxi to Gaastmeer. From Gaastmeer take the water taxi at It Oerset across the canal and follow the cycle way to Heidenskip and on to Hindelopen. Alternatively, from Njihuizum, take the cycle route to Workum and then onto Hindelopen. There is a traditional windmill in good working order at Njihuizum.

Hindeloopen and Nearby

Hindeloopen is an old city located on the IJsselmeer. It is famous because of the Hindeloopen art and Hindeloopen costume. Hindeloopen is one of the eleven cities of Friesland. It has a population of around 875. South of Hindeloopen is the small ferry town of Stavoren. South East of Hindeloopen, the Galamadammen aqua duct carries the canal connecting the De Holken and Morra Lakes over the main road.
