The Jungfraujoch is accessible by train. The traib winds its way through the mountains, arriving in a cavern below the Jungfraujoch.

The col or gap between the Mönch and the Jungfrau peaks is called Jungfraujoch. From the gap - and it's viewing terrace you can see down into the Lauterbrunnen on one side and the Aletsch Glacier on the other.Close to the gap, a peak known as the Sphinx rises to over 3,570 metres.

An elevator has been built inside this peak, which brings visitors to a viewing platform at the top.

The Jungfraujoch railway station, the terminus on Europe's highest railway (3,450 metres ) is close by.

After arriving by train visitors can visit the viewing platform, walk inside the glacier or hike the snow fields above the glacier.

The Aletsch Glacier, with a length of about 23 km is the longest in Europe.

The three glaciers which make up the Aletcsh Glacier converge at Concordia and then continue down until the River Massa is formed which flows on into the the River Rhone.

The glacier is approx. 1km thick at the converging point at Concordia.

The three tributary glaciers are Great Aletschfirn which starts below Aletschhorn and Dreieckhorn., the Jungfraufirn which continues straight down to become the Aletsch Glacier and the Ewigschneefeld whose starting point is on the east side of Mönchs. From Jungfraujoch viewing platform the Jungfraufirn is within touching distance below.

Visitors can walk inside the glacier at Jungfraujoch (Aletsch Glacier).

A tunnel has been carved out into the ice and a number of sculptures have been created from in the ice.

The area of the Aletsch Glacier and some surrounding valleys is a UNESCO World Heritage site and development in the region is restricted.

For the experienced hiker Glacier tours can be organised through Konkordia Hut or the Hollandia Hut.

Alternatively it is possible to hike from the Sphinx to mountain huts close by.

For most people arriving at the Jungfraujoch, the experience of touching or feeling the snow is enough, though there is a snow play zone with zip wires, toboggan and ski slope which is popular.

Glacier tours can be done with the help of the Konkordia Hut or the Hollandia Hut, eventually reaching other glaciers in the massif.

Even on a warm summers day the temperature at Jungfraujoch is cold and near or below freezing and the wind can be strong adding an additional chilling factor, so one should be dressed for trekking before setting out waling the snow paths.
