The harbour while having a marina is still a working fishing harbour - where many fishing boats trawling the Arabian Gulf bring their catch ashore.

The fish market is right along the Corniche towards it's northern end. The best time to visit is after the fishing bats have unloaded their catch, although the market is busy most mornings.

Built by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan as a unifying fom for unifying the diverse cultures of the Islamic world.

The mosque is the largest in the UAE and stretches to almost the size of 6 soccer pitches. It is the 8th largest in the world. Over 40,000 people visit the mosque for prayers at the start of Ramdan. In the north - east minaret there is a community library with classic books and publications in science and civilisation.

The main prayer hall accommodates over 7000 worshippers. The carpet is the largest in the world and made in Iran. The chandelier made from Swarovski crystals is the third largest in the world. The 96 columns in the main prayer hall are inlaid with mother of pearl.

With it's main theme being one of unification, Sheikh Zayed used artisans and materials from many countries including Italy, Germany, Morocco, Pakistan, India, Turkey, Malaysia, Iran, China, United Kingdom, New Zealand, Greece and United Arab Emirates. The design incorporates both Mughal and Moorish mosque architecture.

After oil was discovered in the 1930s, the older trades along the coast such as pearl diving fell into decline as the city grew in opulence. Today Abu Dhabi is the wealthiest of the emirates. The city is the home of the federal and UAE government. While the city has grown rapidly, it continues to outpace other cities in the region.

While high on the visitor must see list the Emirates Palace is not an actual palace but a 7 start luxury hotel. The hotel was opened in 2005/6 and is owned by the Abu Dhabi government. The hotel cost of construction was about 5 billion euro.
