The Mekong Delta with its numerous dis-tributaries covers almost the entire region of south west Vietnam. The delta with its vast area of flood plains where the water level rises and falls dramatically with the seasons is Vietnam's most important agricultural area and one of the most bio-diverse areas in the world.
You can join a boat tour in HCMC or travel out by car or bus to some of the towns within the delta such as My Tho - the closest to HCMC or Vinh Long or deeper into the delta to Can Thao or a further north to Cao Lanh From the town jetties you can pick up cruises of varying duration to suit your needs.
Along the route you will come across various floating markets or floating villages - but check the details of the tour with the operator before setting out.

Whether you stop off at My Thao, Vinh Long or deeper into the Delta you can include canal trip along with your tour.
The canal boats hold about ten people and are controlled by the boat operator who uses a paddle to propel the boat through the sometime narrow canals.
Depending on the season you may be many metres below the high water levels of the canals, which gives a good perspective of the size of the delta during the rainy season.
The canals will take you past well cultivated orchards growing coconuts, longan, jackfruit and some other local specialities.

The water levels and the level of flooding depends on the time of year and the season.
The Mekong on its approach to the sea slits into numerous rivers and tributaries ( dis tributaries ) forming the delta.
