North West Coast
The North West Coast of Western Australia is sparsely populated with few towns. Port Hedland the largest town has a population of approx. 15,000 while the population of Carnarvon is less than 5000. The distance between Carnarvon and 80-mile beach is over 1100 km and even longer if you take in some of the smaller places such as Coral Bay along the coast.
80 Mile Beach
80 Mile beach lies about half way between Broome and Port Hedland. While it may seem as if the beach is 80 miles in length, it is actually longer, approx. 140 miles long forming the coastline where the Great Sandy Desert approaches the Indian Ocean. It is one of the most important sites for migratory shorebirds, or waders, in Australia.
